With no girls’ track team, she had to compete in the boys’ team and even ran against boys from other schools in the 400m and 800m competitions her speciality.
Sydney’s mother graduated from O’Hara High School in 1979 and joined Manhattan College. Again, the university did not have a women’s track team, so she joined the men’s program and became team manager. It was here where she met Willie Mclaughlin, who at the time was competing in the men’s 400 metres competitions.
She got married to Willie McLaughlin her husband and they were blessed with three children namely Taylor McLaughlin, Morgan McLaughlin, and Ryan McLaughlin.
