Joe Kapp is a former American football player and coach. He was born on March 19, 1938, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Kapp played college football at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a two-time All-American quarterback.
In 1959, Kapp was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the 18th round of the NFL Draft but chose to play for the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League (CFL) instead. He played for the Stampeders from 1961 to 1966 and was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player in 1963.

Kapp returned to the United States in 1967 and joined the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL. He led the Vikings to Super Bowl IV in 1970 but lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Kapp played for the Vikings until 1969 and then played one season for the Boston Patriots in 1970.
After his playing career, Kapp coached at several universities and in the CFL. He was the head coach at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1982 to 1986 and led the Golden Bears to a 10-2 record in 1991, their best season in over 40 years. Kapp also coached the Calgary Stampeders and the British Columbia Lions in the CFL.
Kapp was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1991 and the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1984.
