from Trip Advisor:
One of the first restaurants I remember when I moved back to Chicago in 1968 was the Como Inn, near the intersection of Halsted, Grand and Milwaukee. It dated to the 1930s and was everything that was old Chicago, a magnificent Italian interior decor to match a magnificent Italian cuisine. For years, my newspapers, the Chicago Daily News and the Chicago Sun-Times, hosted high school sports dinners and banquets at the Como Inn. The staff was so professional. The banquet meals were as if you ordered off the menu. Loved the lasagna, spaghetti, mostaccioli, minestrone, chicken, veal, garlic bread, creme brulee. Then the Como Inn closed. Somebody wanted to build a residential building on the site. So the owners, the Marchetti family, opened Galleria Marchetti a block away at 825 West Erie Street, between Halsted and Milwaukee. The atmosphere isn\'t the same but the food and service is, especially the lasagna and spaghetti and veal. When the conversation turns to the best Italian restaurants in Chicago, I always rated the Como Inn among the top five. Galleria Marchetti deserves better than it gets. by Taylor B.
from Crains:
After 77 years in business, the Como Inn will serve its last plate of spaghetti Saturday night.
The River West Italian restaurant, long a landmark to members of professional associations who used its many dining rooms for monthly meetings and to drivers on the nearby Kennedy Expressway, is making way for a housing development. The 14-room Romanesque villa just west of the Loop has hosted about 100 business meetings a month, for groups ranging from 20 to 100 people.
The restaurant was founded in 1924 by Giuseppe Marchetti, who came to Chicago from a small village in Tuscany. During its heyday, the restaurant was host to Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Perry Como. Mr. Marchetti\'s son, Joe, has run the business for the past several years, as well as the nearby Galleria Marchetti and Montefiore in Lemont.
Mr. Marchetti said that at 67, it was time to scale back his responsibility and concentrate on his remaining restaurants. He said he also plans to open a new restaurant, in July, with his son.
\"I remember working since i was 6 years old, so it\'s a little bit of a bittersweet situation. But it\'s been a great journey.\"
He said he decided to close the restaurant , in part, because of the high property value and the changing attitudes of diners.
\"The way things are today, people are loyal to what\'s new,\" he said.
The developer of the site, Belgravia Group Ltd., said it is planning to build 34 new townhouses on part of the site, in addition to 34 townhouses nearby that are close to completion. The original restaurant building will be saved, and possibly turned into a new restaurant. Belgravia declined to disclose the purchase price of the property.
The first phase of the townhouses will be finished by November, 2001, the second phase by December 2002.
