He was born on March 9, 1980, in St. Louis, Missouri. He went to McCluer North High School in Florissant, Missouri, a St. Louis suburb.

He was a member of the St. Louis rap trio Without Warning, and his initial stage name was H Thugz. He subsequently changed his identity to Chingy.

He is a former protégé of Ludacris and is best known for his albums Jackpot (2003) and Powerballin (2004). He has a net worth of $2 million dollars.
